Sensory processing issues and executive functioning weakness can be challenging for kids because when adults don’t consider brain-based explanations for behavior they can assume this behavior is a controllable choice. Maladaptive behavioral responses can be similar in nature to a child who doesn’t participate in PE because they have a broken leg; they aren’t refusing because they are lazy or unmotivated, they have a broken leg that won’t support their weight to run.
Behavior issues can occur for many reasons but many behavior-related issues stem from lagging developmental skills that affect performance and make it hard to control behavior. When kids don’t have the right skills for the given situation, behavioral regulation will be very tough. This occurs whether we are talking about a six-year-old or a sixteen-year-old. Brain development is responsible for skill development, and if the skills aren’t there, this child will struggle to find fun or success because executive skills are always a huge part of the puzzle. Since behavior is an intuitive way to better understand a child’s world, we may form assumptions based on the behavior we are seeing. When kids know they aren’t good at something, they can easily create a distraction to prevent people from figuring this out. This can occur in an academic or social situation.
