The Secret to Happy...
AND helping a child find it at any age and in any capacity
Kids are amazing.
I love how they think and the innocence that is genuinely human.
Most kids can take ANYTHING and find the purpose and the good.
Our society today is tough.
There is a lot of negativity, and all we can control is how we respond.
There are a lot of kids who struggle-
with behavior, school, friends, sometimes everything.
This site is my attempt to reach more people,
to help more kids, families, and educators.
I hope some of this content gives you a different way to see a child.
This is a start.
Whether this child is 3 or 13, your perspective of their behavior is critical.
You can help this child figure out the various puzzle pieces that make up HAPPY and uncover the WHY behind the challenges.
It doesn't matter if you are a full-time working parent, a teacher, or a friend.
It only takes ONE person to see this child differently.
There is a purpose, even some goodness, in the struggle.
If you can spin your thinking like this, you WILL find happy.

Whether you work with or live with a child who is struggling, the WHY behind their behavior is critical if you are going to support their needs and help them become the best version of themself. Hi! My name is Kristin Robison and I am an occupational therapist who loves figuring out the WHY behind behavior. I work in private practice and in schools with amazing educators doing just this... because if you can figure out WHY someone is struggling, you will have an easier time making the journey just a little bit easier- for all of us. This website has information to help you determine the WHY behind behavior and this starts with REGULATION. When we are regulated, we can find success. When we struggle to regulate, we need to be able to self-monitor in order to determine what we need to DO so we can become our optimal self...to regulate. |
Regulation is the ability to function successfully even when there are distractions or tasks I don't like or may not be good at. If I am regulated I can be productive.
- I find for myself that I am better regulated in the morning; by 3 pm I'm having trouble focusing and doing work that reflects my ability.
- I use coffee, exercise, or take breaks when I am having trouble feeling regulated.
- Self-monitoring is the ability to stop for a moment and focus inward; to figure out why things are off or don't support regulation. If we can help kids learn to self-monitor we will have an easier time guiding them toward strategies or tools for regulation.
The WHY behind behavior determines the tools we need to use.
This WHY is often related to wiring and nervous system thresholds unique to each individual or environment.
If we don't acknowledge these, we will likely use tools that aren't as effective.

When you know a bit more about how a child is wired, you will have an easier time figuring out what their nervous system needs for regulation. Wiring is also going to be a big player in where a child's nervous system threshold lies. A nervous system threshold is the level an individual needs to hit to be able to regulate or do what is expected.
- Sometimes we have a high neurological threshold and we will need more stimulation to regulate and feel good.
- Other times, our threshold will be lower and we risk over-stimulation and hitting it too much which causes shutdown and even "fight or flight" responses.
